Jakarta, Indonesia - On the 24th of August 2023, President Trump arrived in Atlanta Georgia, where he surrendered himself in the Fulton County Jail on charges of racketeering and alleged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results.
After posting a 200,000 USD bail, the former president returned to Atlanta Airport, where he left the city and awaits further development on his prosecution.
This comes after a series of legal troubles and indictments, including one in New York City which charged the former president with falsifying business records.
“TRUMP is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with 34 counts of Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree” Said the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in a press release. (04/04/23)
What makes his visit to Atlanta unique however, is that President Trump was made to enter a jail, taking a mugshot and being processed as a suspect for the criminal case.
Trump’s charges in Georgia are based off an accusation that he made an active effort to undermine the election results in the State, with one of the supposed evidence being the former president’s phone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger during the process of counting the 2020 election votes.
In the phone call, the former president claimed he won the election in Georgia, and attempted to convince Raffensperger to “find” the votes that would have won him the State.
After his departure from Atlanta, Trump went back on X (Formerly known as Twitter), posting his mugshot with a link to his website.
“Today, at the notoriously violent jail in Fulton County, Georgia, I was ARRESTED despite having committed NO CRIME” Trump posted to the website. Furthermore, Trump launched an appeal to his supporters to stay the course, requesting for contributions to his campaign for those who are within the means to do so.
“If you are doing poorly due to the sinister people in control of our country right now, don’t even think about donating!” Trump said,
“But if you can, please make a contribution to evict Crooked Joe Biden from the White House and SAVE AMERICA during this dark chapter in our history.” Trump continued, posting the statement on his website DONALDJTRUMP.COM (25/08/23 GMT+7)
If Trump does get arrested and serve a sentence, this would be the first ever case of prosecution followed by a jail sentence for a former president of the United States, without any precedent in history.
Note that even if Trump does get sentenced, he would still be able to run for President should he secure the Republican nomination, which looks within the realm of plausibility as the former president is still the frontrunner in the field of Republican primary candidates.
When the Republican candidates were questioned on the Milwaukee Republican Primary Debates regarding whether or not they would support Trump should he get nominated but get imprisoned, 6 out of 8 of all those on stage affirmed their support for the eventual Republican nominee, signifying that should Trump secure the nomination, he would still be able to run in the general with a decent amount of support even in the worst case legal scenario where he runs from prison.
This may launch a new era of divide and extreme partisan politics to the point of arresting political opponents, as House Republicans in the Oversight and Accountability Committee have launched an investigation into the Biden Family and their domestic and international dealings, specifically those relating to the Biden Family’s activities in Ukraine when Biden was U.S. Vice President.
